The Municipality of Ajdovščina is one of Slovenia’s larger municipalities and serves as the economic, educational, and cultural hub of the Vipava Valley. Situated in western Slovenia near the Italian border, it lies along a vital transport and development corridor connecting the Friuli Plain, the Northern Adriatic, and central Slovenia. The municipality covers an area of 245.2 km² and comprises 45 settlements organized into 28 local communities.
The municipality’s diverse landscape ranges from the fertile Vipava Valley and the Vipava Hills to the high plateaus of Nanos, Hrušica, and the Trnovo Forest. Its natural features, abundant water resources, and rich cultural and historical heritage provide a strong foundation for developing a high-quality living environment, sustainable tourism, agriculture, and other economic activities.
Ajdovščina is known for its dynamic economic development. Traditional sectors—such as the food, construction, wood processing, metalworking, and textile industries—are increasingly integrating and complementing high-tech activities in fields like aviation, biotechnology, information and communication technologies, and other innovative solutions. The municipality actively supports this development by establishing business zones, investing in infrastructure, fostering a supportive environment for entrepreneurship, and facilitating collaboration between the business sector, research and educational institutions, and the local community.
The green and digital transformation constitutes a key part of the Municipality of Ajdovščina’s development strategy. The Municipality implements measures in the fields of renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable mobility, greening, climate change adaptation, and the sustainable management of natural resources. At the same time, it develops digital public services and data-driven approaches to managing the territory, infrastructure, and services for residents. By participating in European projects and international partnerships, the Municipality of Ajdovščina actively seeks and tests innovative solutions for modern urban and regional challenges.
Special emphasis is placed on integrating the development of the town center with the wider municipal area, climate resilience, sustainable infrastructure, smart technologies, and the active involvement of residents in shaping local development.
